The 2 Bs - Blood sugar and Bodyweight

Just visited the doctor's on Tue to test my blood sugar to see if i have gestational diabetes. I was rather worried a few days before the visit as i really don't want to have to deal with diabetes when there are more things to deal with. But, just as i had my anxieties over the blood sugar test, something had to come along to tempt me - DURIANS! Sugar and protein-loaded but it is the shiokest fruit in the world! I was aware of the sugar content but i chose to remember what people have been telling me - that durians are very good source of protein!

My dad's friend gave us some durians on Sun and yours truly, who usually cannot resist durians, just had to eat it and ended up consuming 6-7 seeds. So that was Sunday. And on Monday, my dad passed by our friendly neighbourhood shop that sell durians and was told 'i guarantee you that the durian is very very good!' and he happily brought back two boxes. Boy, the Monday supplies are simply fantastic. It has tiny tiny seeds, taste really really good and i ended up consuming one whole box (ie, 1 durian). I think i must have eaten the same amount on Sunday and Monday.

That's why i was a bit worried when i trotted down to Dr Chew's clinic for the blood test. I was told to have my lunch at 12noon then be at the clinic at 2pm. I followed the instructions to the dot. I also swear my heartbeat was faster than normal times when i stepped into the clinic, and i had to psycho myself to breathe normally when i was laying on the bed waiting for the nurse to check my blood pressure. Then the results - my blood sugar was 122 (the 'high' normal) and my blood pressure was normal. Phew!

Dr Chew asked me to cut down on carbohydrates as i am putting on weight. I've put on about 1 kg each week for the last 3 weeks. And the worst thing is that i have been eating normally (ie, 3 meals of normal portion each day) and didn't have any cravings. That's why i have to repeat my blood sugar test again in 3 weeks.

Well, I will be cutting down on carbos from now on! And i'm so glad durians are known for their proteins and not carbo! Maybe i will have another durian feast this weekend:) I love durians!

Of mummies and tummies

We had two cake-cutting sessions over the weekend to celebrate Mother's Day - one with Chee Meng's aunt (his defacto 'mother' as she took care of him when he was young) and the other with my own mummy of course. In fact, both Chee Meng and myself had been so overwhelmed by Mother's Day, coz i was preoccupied with asking for a mother-to-be gift from daddy-to-be! So much so that we both forgot that 11 May was our wedding aniversary! Oops! People have been saying that the relationship will take a back seat when the baby arrives ... well, i hope our absent-mindedness this year is just an extraordinary lapse and won't repeat itself next year!

Well, here are some pictures of the cake-cutting sessions:)

With Chee Meng's 3rd Aunt:)

With my own lovely mummy:)

Some of you, especially Aunt Lee Chin, have also been asking me if my tummy is big etc. Actually, i can feel the weight of bebe, especially when i try to get out of bed. I'm about 23 weeks now and my maternity jeans are feeling just right now (they used to be quite loose..) So, here's a photo of my tummy!

My tummy at 23 weeks:)

But what really excite Chee Meng and myself are the little somersaults that bebe attempts, and it has been more frequent and more apparent recently. I love it when Chee Meng places his hands on my tummy, talks to Bebe and Bebe reciprocates - but i wonder if Bebe is protesting against the pressure from Daddy's hands or happy to hear Daddy's voice?! Well, i think it's the latter! Now the challenge is to get Daddy to sing some nursery rhymes to Bebe:)

Bebe is a Boy:)

Just had a detailed scan this morning to check if bebe's organs are ok as well as the gender. The first thing the ultrasonist did was to check the gender. And bebe was most cooperative by simply stretching out his legs and showing off his little 'treasure':) Of course daddy was delighted coz he will now be able to buy and play the boy toys he never got to enjoy in his childhood (though i'm not sure if he or bebe will play it!)

Well, this morning's appointment was at 8.30am and by the time i had my scan, it was almost 9.10am. The scan took more than an hour, coz the ultrasonist had to check the heart, brain, kidneys, bladder, hands, lips, nose, spine etc. By about 9.50am, the ultrasonist was trying to capture a picture of bebe's spine but had problems doing it as bebe's position was not 'ideal'. Bebe was up and about and facing downwards but the ultrasonist needed Bebe to face upwards towards my stomach so that she can capture Bebe on his 'back'. All attempts at moving left/right and shaking the tummy did little to make Bebe do a 'flip'! By this time, my tummy was already making noises, as i only had a little bun at home coz i thought it would be a quick scan. The doctor in charge then asked the ultrasonist to ask me to come back 15-minutes later and try to see if we can capture a better picture of his spine. Of course, the 15-minute 'break' meant breakfast! We 'sprinted' to Delifrance and chomped down an egg sandwich in less than 5 minutes!

15 minutes later, the result was the same.. Bebe was still in the same position:) Maybe he's tired! Haha! So the doctor said that he will just report it as such as there is no way we can cajole Bebe to do a 180-degree flip:)

Then we proceeded to Dr Peter Chew's clinic for the consultation. At the clinic, Dr Chew did another scan of Bebe.. and boy, he was really shy (see pic below - apologies if it is not too clear) He was covering his face with both his hands.. either he's quite fed-up of us trying to take pictures of him or he's just sleepy and wants us to stop bothering him and let him get on with his sleep! Hmm... the sleepy part sounds just like me.. haha!

A bumper year for babies

Just heard the news on Monday that 2 other cousins are also expecting a baby this year-end. Heather's due in Nov and Carol's due in Dec. This means that bebe will have 2 playmates to grow up with! Hmm... i've also been seeing quite a number of pregnant women around, and have this nagging feeling that bebe might have to jostle for primary one school places when the time comes! But that's still a long way to go:)

There was also excitement over the gender of the babies:) And i was referring to the chart given to Mum by an grandaunt in KL which shows you if you are having a baby boy or girl based on the age and month of conception. Interesting and quite true apparently! Mum told me that Grandaunt said that i'm 'confirmed' to be carrying a boy based on my age and month of conception. And it seems quite true.. I've also tried checking the chart based on Eric, Lionel and myself but was quite confusing, silly but interesting. One of my colleagues checked it and said it was accurate and said that she will use it to plan for a baby boy (coz she's a mother of 2 princesses). Wish her luck!

Was supposed to go for a scan this morning but Chee Meng had to attend an urgent meeting at the last minute. We decided to postpone it to tomorrow (luckily there were still slots available) as i think it's important for daddy to be present when we are confirming the gender of bebe.. I am quite excited about the scan tomorrow and have asked Chee Meng to photograph me while i am being scanned - so that you can see my tummy (hmmm, should i pose for the camera??!!) and hopefully the image on the screen! And i think tomorrow's scan will be clearer as the machine is more high-tech... though the most important thing is that bebe must want to be an exhibitionist to show his/her stuff!!

Watch this space for updates!
